Empellon Taqueria-- 230 West 4th St, NY

I'm going to start with the score:  absolutely 5 pineapples.  We sat down at a table in the middle of the restaurant, with a freaky painting of a skull woman above us.  Nice style!  We started with the red snapper ceviche, which was very cold and refreshing.  The snapper had a bit of a spice to it, and the tomatoes contributed an extra juiciness and crunch.  Now, let the tacos be served!  We decided to share the beef braised pork tongue with chorizo, the skirt steak, and the lamb barbacoa.  The pork was by far the best of the three-- so tender, and was a little sweet and spicy.  The tongue was very smooth and easy to chew; better than ham!  The skirt steak was also yummy-- it was seared expertly, nice and rare, with some mojo de ajo (roasted garlic sauce).  The lamb was very surprising, because I didn't expect the texture to be more like pulled pork.  It was perfectly salty, and had a complex flavor mixed up of salsa borracha which is a mixture of chili peppers, orange juice and tequila.  Can they serve me tequila? The homemade flour tortillas tasted fresh, light and didn't fall apart.  And the habanero salsa!  My tongue (haha sorry pig) was on fire!  My entire mouth was burning, but of course I kept putting more on!  I am definitely coming back down here. Overall, I give Empellon Taqueria 5 pineapples!!!! You knew that already.  Till next time!
