Maison O is a new japanese restaurant that has a hip vibe and a great bar/lounge downstairs, which could be used to throw some great parties. One problem-- when we got there, it was pretty much dead. More of a late night place. It's not a regular japanese restaurant.
We sat down at a booth near the window. I noticed some cool drawings hanging from the light fixtures and the hostess had a plastic bag filled with christmas lights next to the desk. Very artsy. We started with 4 appetizers. The first was shishito peppers stuffed with tsukune, seasoned ground chicken. The peppers contributed a nice spice, and the tsukune had a hint of sweetness to it, which mixed the flavors nicely. Definitely a more fun kind of stuffed pepper. Next we shared the Eggplant agedashi-- it was cooked tender and braised in a soy mirin broth. It was a bit spicy because of the shishito peppers put into the sauce. SO MUCH SHISHITO. Third, we shared the Lamb chops, which had a nice char and a yummy teriyaki background. The best thing about the lamb chops was that they were so tender we could pick them up and just bite straight into it. Our final appetizer was the Lamb Gyoza, giant sized dumpling!!! It's a humongous mound of ground lamb, scallions, and spicy seasoning. There was grilled SHISHITO peppers on the side, of course. The wrapper was nice and chewy. Now, for the sushi.
First, the spicy tuna roll with super spicy sauce-- I thought it would be overwhelming, but had just the perfect burn. Then the yellowtail yuzu kosho, which had a lemon touch to it. Yellowtail was a bit too stringy, though. And the soft shell crab roll, highlight of the night. The batter had a nice crunch, while the crab itself had a fresh sweet taste. Loved it all! Overall, I give Maison O 4 pineapples. I will definitely be coming back(late night) if I want anymore SHISHITO peppers. Till next time!
