Lafayette-- 380 Lafayette St, NY

Lafayette is the restaurant that replaced Chinatown Brasserie.  Those jerks!  I know, what a start to a review!  Anyway, it is still a beautiful restaurant, and the outside eating area is just blue instead of red.  I also like the the logo better.  The place is also a take out café, with delicious looking muffins and scones.  We got seated at a booth near the window.  I ordered the Coquilles with veal ragout and brebis.  (If you didn't know, brebis is a type of cheese that is produced from floral sheep's milk.)  The pasta was cooked el dente.  I enjoyed the dish, but I felt like there wasn't enough meat.  There was plenty of sauce, but ragout is supposed to be very chunky, not like bolognese.  I had also ordered some crushed red pepper, but it took them 15 minutes to get it.  I had three bites left by the time it came.  My grandmother had the Black Fettuccine with cuttlefish, ruby red shrimp, clams and chorizo.  When you looked at the dish, it looked alien.  I usually don't really see black pasta around the house.  But, it was still amazing, I think better than mine.  All the seafood had great flavor and was cooked perfectly tender.  My mom had the prime beef tartare with watercress and bone marrow.  I must say, that was better than the tuna tartare at Noah's.  I never thought raw meat could taste so good!  Overall, I give Lafayette 3 1/2 pineapples.  I still liked Chinatown Brasserie better.  Too bad they closed.
