Cheese Trucks-- Gorilla Cheese, Phil's Steaks and The Milk Truck

These trucks are all very cheesy.  They all specialize in sandwiches, mostly cheese related.  First I went to Gorilla Cheese, which has been around for a few years.  I have seen them catering at lots of events, and their most popular dish is actually their cheese steak sandwich.  The owner was very kind, and gave me a free piece of grilled cheese and ham, which was only okay.  I thought the cheese tasted a little funky (I believe it was cheddar) and the ham was very chewy, and almost fell out completely when I bit into the sandwich.  The bread was perfectly crispy though, and had beautiful grill lines.  I won't be chasing down this truck again.

Phil's Steaks-- Specializing in Cheese Steaks and their Breakfast Steak n' Eggs.  I found it right in front of the main building of NYU.  The owner was very mellow and enjoys running his truck-- but it's not easy work.  A food truck comes with tough competition, and be ready for rival trucks to steal your spot!  It's just how the system works, he said.  Their big rivals are Shorty's cheese steaks and Gorilla Cheese.  He didn't give me a taste, but I've read good reviews.

The hot truck for grilled cheese is THE MILK TRUCK!!!!  The Milk Truck is probably the most popular food truck in NYC, as they are listed as #1 on many best food truck countdowns on the web.  They serve gourmet grilled cheese, mac and cheese, MILK-shakes, and other smoothies.  I had originally seen the Milk Truck in the beginning of my study, but I couldn't get an interview because they were so busy at the time.  They told me to come back another day.  I definitely understood that, since they had about 20 customers waiting in front of the truck.

Luckily, when I tracked them down the next week, they were 10 minutes away from opening so I got to talk to them for a while.  Turns out they get 200-400 customers a day in the winter, so just imagine summer!  The two owners of the truck, Jessie and Samantha, were so nice that they even let me in the truck to take pictures of the kitchen! I was so pumped!  It was narrow and streamlined with grills lined up on one side and supplies and ingredients on the other.  Jessie made me a classic grilled cheese which we split, and may have been the best I've ever had.  The cheese was perfectly gooey, super hot, which really warmed me up.  And the bread, oh the bread.  I've never had a more delectable looking grilled bread, and it had the perfect crisp, crunch, and softness.  Absolutely delicious, this is without a doubt my favorite food truck.

I rate Gorilla Cheese 3 pineapples, and Milk Truck 5.  (Didn't taste Phil's Steaks)

Till next time!
