LAUT- 15 E 17th Street, NY

LAUT is a Malaysian restaurant that mixes classical Thai cooking styles with a modern twist. The place was quiet at first, but it started to crowd up later. To start, I ordered a lychee juice, which was insanely good and even had lychees inside to scoop out and munch. For our appetizer, we shared the Five Spice Pork Roll, which tasted like a sweetly-seasoned sausage with a crispy, salty exterior wrapping. For my main course, I ate the Mee Hoon Goreng noodles, which were rice noodles with sautéed beef, an egg, lots of carrots, and some scallions. Simple, but quite delicious-- the beef was very tender and seasoned nicely with a sweet teriyaki sauce-- the very thin noodles were tasty and nicely subtle, but I found them hard to eat because they were so slippery-- however this could've just been because of my plastic chopsticks. (I hate plastic chopsticks!!!!) We all shared the fried snapper, which  perfectly mixed a spicy sauce with a sweet seasoning, but lacked in the amount of filet. The fish had a crispy skin and a yummy, flaky interior. And such a huge fish, too. Finally, my mom and dad ordered the Mee Goreng noodles, which was covered with a shrimp chili paste-- deliciously briny and complex, and much more interesting then a simple teriyaki sauce. As a last mention, we had a side of baby bok choy-- I loved that they were real BABY baby bok choy, and they contributed a simple taste. It was cooked perfectly, with a little crunch but not too soggy,  and was a great accompaniment to all the intense flavors of the other dishes. Overall, LAUT sounded like this really amazing place-- its great, but not amazing. Great enough that we ordered in from it next week. Hey, at least it didn't disappoint like NGAM. 3 1/2 pineapples.

Till next time!
