The Bao-- St. Marks, NY

The Bao is a modern restaurant in St. Marks with authentic dishes and chinese artwork in a very zen setting. To start we had the Dan Dan noodles and the pan fried dumplings. The noodles weren't thick, but more like ramen noodles. They were slippery and spicy with a lot of garlic and basil flavor. A small dish, but tasty. The dumplings were crisped to perfection, and the pork inside was tender and seasoned well with chives. Next, we attempted ordering the sliced pork, but we received a bowl of ground pork covered in shredded chives. It would've been better in a lettuce cup, but would've been impossible to eat with chopsticks. We sent it back. Next, the sliced sauteed eggplant in garlic sauce. Piping hot and deliciously savory with bits of onions and scallions. Afterwards, we ordered the shredded beef with slivered green peppers, which were super spicy but delicious. The beef was tender and not greasy at all. Then, we consumed the chili poahced cod with bok choy and schezuan pepper corns. While the fish itself was meltingly tender and tasty, the numbing from the schezuan pepper overwhelmed the dish. White rice was a much needed accompaniement. Finally, we had the Bao's specialty, the Bao dumplings. You take a small bite and then slurp the soup inside, and then eat the dumpling itself. Delicious! Nice and hot, the broth is yummy, and the pork was tender and savory. Great way to finish the meal. Overall, I give the Bao 4 pineapples.

Till next time!
