MoonGate Asian Grill- Hyatt Ziva, Cancun, Mexico

We went to MoonGate twice over the course of vacation, but for different reasons. The first time, we wanted to experience the restaurant itself, and not eat at the Hibachi Grill/Performance. We started with the spicy tuna roll, which, while delicious, came with such few pieces of sushi that we shouldn't have bothered ordering it. Other appetizers included the flavorless hijiki salad, and the greasy, no-filling spring rolls. Fo my entree, I ordered the sesame chicken, which was a fried chicken dish drizzled with a sweet/spicy duck sauce. My dad ordered the Vietnamese beef, which was the undisputed highlight of the meal. The beef cubes were charred nicely, and the hoisin sauce was sweet but savory. My mom had ordered a Pad Thai, but it wasn't Pad Thai, just a weird, funky noodle dish with a strange aftertaste. She ordered the beef instead. It wasn't a bad meal, but we would come back within the next few days to try out the hibachi grill.

The chefs were very flashy, juggling knives, lighting the grill on fire, and cracking eggs in mid-air. However, despite the applause-worthy performances, the food was sub-par. While the fried rice was perfectly seasoned, all the vegetables and meat were poorly cooked and over-salted. The shrimp was drowned in butter, and we ended up leaving half way through to finish our dinner at El Mercados.

I give it 2 1/2 pineapples.
