Loring Place was undoubtedly a disappointment. Dimly lit with a modern lighting sculpture that spanned from ceiling to spiraling staircase, the restaurant was well decorated and had a very classy atmosphere. We started with the fried cauliflower, which ended up being the undisputed highlight of the meal. The cauliflower was fried to perfection, with a delicious, savory crisp on the outside and a tender inside. It was also accompanied by a meyer lemon jam and thinly sliced chilies. The jam was a treat to drown the cauliflower in. For our second appetizer, we ordered the Brussels sprouts. Now, I'm not a big fan or expert on sprouts in general, but I've never been to a restaurant so incapable of cooking a simple dish. They arrived cold and mushy, so we sent them back, hoping for a better re-do. They arrived the exact the same way, only colder. After talking to the manager, they brought it out for us a third time, and while it was finally hot, it still remained mushy because they probably just threw the same dish in the microwave.
For my entree, I ordered the grass fed burger. The meat was cooked a nice medium, but I found the substantial amounts of cheddar cheese to be overwhelming, and thus, took away from the other potential good qualities of the burger.
My mom ate the grilled scallops with sunchokes, apples and lime. The scallops were very sweet and the sunchokes were prepared in a purée, which was very creamy and complimented the scallops well. The apples and lime added a hint of brightness to the dish.
My dad's suckling pig was very disappointing- while we imagined big, juicy chunks of pork, he received a strange, almost gray-colored square of meat, that was very stringy, bland, and simply off-putting to look at.
Loring Place isn't a necessarily bad restaurant, but it's menu has the potential to be so delicious. Unfortunately, they're unable to execute the majority of their simple and sophisticated dishes. 2 1/2 pineapples. Till next time!
